Eagle Nest to revamp Crime Watch program

Beginning in 2014, the Eagle Nest Board of Directors will be working to revamp our long-dormant neighborhood Crime Watch program. Under the leadership of program coordinator and resident Cindy Spicklemire, the board will be contacting residents to recruit volunteers to be the eyes and ears in 22 different zones throughout our neighborhood. If you get a call from a board member in the coming weeks, please consider joining the effort. Once we have our anti-crime corps lined up, the board will bring in IMPD Crime Watch leaders for a neighborhood meeting to answer questions and offer guidance on effective crime-fighting tips. We also are considering hiring a private security firm to patrol the neighborhood again, a service eliminated several years ago because of cost and the company's ineffectiveness. While Eagle Nest has been virtually crime-free for decades, crime knows no boundaries, and we have seen a rise in incidents in recent months, including at least one attempted break

Holiday Lights Contest winner is ...

The home of Jeff and Renee Schwegman at 7816 Mallard Way won first place in the 2013 Eagle Nest Holiday Decorating Contest.  They are the proud recipients of a $25 gift card from Target. The runner up home was the house of Jim and Kim Hardie at 7509 Teel Way. The judges also wanted to acknowledge last year's winners, Brandy and Brian Schneider, 8331 Mockingbird Lane, who continue to have a great light display. Thank you to the judges from the Eagle Nest Social Committee. Thanks also to all the Eagle Nest residents who make the neighborhood brighter and more festive with their holiday lights! We will have the contest next year with more prizes so hit the after-Christmas sales! -- Submitted by Alice Miley

Drivers ignoring stop signs endanger residents

Recently reports have surfaced of drivers ignoring and rolling through stop signs throughout the neighborhood, especially at the four-way stop of Teel Way and Tanager Lane. In November, one Eagle Nest resident wrote to the Board stating that her high school children were almost hit by a car ignoring a school bus stop arm and the stop signs at the intersection. It's not clear whether the motorist involved was an Eagle Nest resident, but stop sign noncompliance -- especially among teenagers -- has been a longtime Eagle Nest issue. For years residents living near our various intersections have witnessed countless instances of such irresponsible driving and near accidents. It's worth noting that under Indiana law, disregarding a school bus stop sign is consider reckless driving (a class B misdemeanor) and is punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a maximum fine of $1,000. Suffice so say, Eagle Nest residents are reminded that all vehicles must come to a complete stop for

911 use topic of crime watch meeting

If you are interested in learning about the 911 emergency line and how it can help deter crime in Eagle Nest, please plan to attend a free meeting at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 12, at Castleton United Methodist Church, 7101 N. Shadeland Ave. (Enter door #2 to the right of the main entrance). The guest speaker is Diana Vanarsdall of the Marion County Sheriffs Office/911 Communications. The objective of the meeting is to have an open discussion about how 911 is organized, how it works best and the reluctance some residents have to call until it may be too late. The following questions likely will be discussed: Have you ever called 911? Have you ever not called 911 but later wished that you did? What kept you from calling? What information should you be prepared to provide when you dial 911? What are the six W's of 911? (who, what, when, where, why and weapons?) The event is sponsored by the Crime Watch Committee of Castleton Estates Homeowners Association. Many residents of Ca

Home invasion reported on Tanager Court

About midnight on Nov. 6, a home invasion was reported in the 8100 block of Tanager Court, just off 75th Street and Hague Road. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Click here to see a report from WTHR (Channel 13) . (Sadly, the report did not include suspect descriptions or any statements from police.) Suffice to say, if you see something suspicious in our neighborhood, say something! Call 911 to report any unusual vehicles or suspicious activity. 911 is not just for fires, medical emergencies or car accidents -- it's for safety, too. Social events continue in Eagle Nest

Plan to celebrate the fall season with the next Eagle Nest social event, the Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, Oct. 26th at 5 p.m. at the clubhouse. This fall festival will also include a Halloween Costume Contest for the kids.  Resident chefs who want to participate should bring a crock pot of their favorite chili.  There will be a $25 prize for the winner.  We'll have desserts and veggies too, but if attendees want adult beverages, it's BYOB.  Other social events to come include the Winter Bizarre with neighborhood Direct Sales Consultants on Sunday, Nov. 24 , from 1-5 p.m. at the clubhouse.  All direct sales consultants in the neighborhood are welcome to set up a table for their products.  If out -of-the-neighborhood consultants want to participate, the cost will be $15.  One donated item from each vendor will be part of a raffle for attendees. With the arrival of the new year, events will continue.  Come and taste what's brewing in the neighborhood!  Many residents

September busy month for crime in neighborhoods around Eagle Nest

Thankfully, Eagle Nest has been spared from major crime in the past month, but at least five incidents in  surrounding neighborhoods and area businesses have been reported to police. Check out the updated " Crime and police reports " tab at right for the latest incidents, as reported by BRAG. Suffice to say, if you see something suspicious -- say something! Call 911 and report it, no matter how small. Callers with crime tips who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers of Indiana at (317) 262-8477 (TIPS). Callers also can  text "INDYCS" plus tip information to 274627 (CRIMES). How to handle solicitors in Eagle Nest

Fall is coming, and means solicitors will be out making their seasonal rounds. Painters, tree-removal firms, window replacemeny companies, roofing and construction repairers -- all will be coming out of the woodwork. The Eagle Nest Board has gotten a few recent calls about solicitors, so following are neighborly suggestions and reminders in case your doorbell rings: 1. Remind solicitors that the entire neighborhood is considered a "no soliciting" zone. Eagle Nest has "No Soliciting" signs posted at each entrance. Ask solicitors to please heed the message. 2. Explain to solicitors that those who disregard our request for a "no soliciting" zone could find themselves on our neighborhood "black list" of unwelcome vendors and services. 3. Residents have legal rights. If you have a "No Soliciting" sign on your property (i.e. door, window, etc.) and a solicitor enters your property, they are breaking the law. You have every right to ca

Eagle Nest resident Robert Bishop has two "like new" 26-inch red bicycles for sale, $50 each. One bike has coaster brakes, the other has handle-bar brakes. Attempted breakin on White Dove Court

Sometime between 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, the front door of a house on White Dove Court was smashed open with a crow bar. The residents were out to dinner at the time, but the homeowners' two large dogs were home and apparently scared away the potential burglars. A nearby resident in the same cul de sac found a small box of costume jewelry on his back porch, which may have been left behind by the would-be thieves looking for other targets. About the same time, another neighbor thought he heard rustling in his backyard but dismissed it as squirrels. Police say the incidents are likely related and that the thieves were casing houses in the White Dove Court area. No one was hurt in the incident. No arrests have been made. Eagle Nest residents are advised to call 911 if you see or hear any suspicious activity. (By the way, 911 isn't just for reporting car crashes or heart attacks -- you won't get in trouble for calling it if you want to report something. Police wil

Want a hand in neighborhood events?

The kids are going back to school, and Labor Day is approaching -- but that doesn't mean our Family Fun Nights have to end! Our Social Committee did a fantastic job this summer organizing and sponsoring weeks of activities, including Marco's Pizza specials, a bounce house, cupcake night, a tie-dye event and our annual pool party. Hundreds of residents flocked to the Clubhouse for these first-time events -- and we're looking for ideas and help to keep the momentum going. The goal, of course, is to create an engaging community atmosphere for families and fun ways to meet our neighbors. The hope is to expand our options to include seniors, young professionals and teens. If you are interested in contributing ideas or volunteering your time to plan events, please attend the Social Committee's next planning meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 29 at the Clubhouse. The committee is open to anyone, it's free and a great way to become involved in the neighborhood. Ques

Modified pool hours begin Aug. 19

The Eagle Nest Pool will operate under a shortened schedule beginning Monday, August 19, through Labor Day, Sept. 2. New pool hours will 4-8 p.m. Monday-Friday, with regular weekend hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The altered schedule occurs every year for two reasons: lifeguard availability (all of our staffers are students returning to class) and a reduction in attendance (resident use always declines at the end of the season). At this writing, the pool's final day of operation will be Labor Day. The pool should be open normal hours that day, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., but watch this blog for any updates and changes. As always, feel free to contact Pool Manager with questions/concerns/compliments at 371-4275 or at sbkmtanderson@att.net Enjoy the remaining weeks of our swim season! -- Submitted by Scott Thien

Pool is open again -- green is gone

Once again, our super Pool Manager Susan Anderson has cleared up the green water and reopened the Eagle Nest pool for business! Thank your for your patience and understanding in weathering this temporary closure ( click here for previous post explaining cause/effect ). -- Submitted by Scott Thien

International students seek host families

Ever thought about becoming a host family for an international exchange student? Eagle Nest resident Lynne Burns is local coordinator for the Council on International Educational Exchange and she's looking for volunteers. The program has an immediate need for several high school-age students wanting to visit our area and study. Countries of origin include Indonesia, China, Spain and South Korea. Pool is green again -- but safe

Yes, the Eagle Nest pool is battling more green algae -- but our facility isn't the only outdoor pool with the problem. Turns out several neighborhoods share our frustration, including Kensington Farms. It's a bit of a mystery, too, pool manager Susan Anderson says, because just a week ago we closed the pool for 30 hours to chemically "super shock" the water to eliminate the harmless greenish tint. The Marion County Health Department gave the all-clear after analyzing our water, which was never a health issue, before or after treatment. Nonetheless, Susan closed the pool today (Aug. 14) so her crew could conduct another chemical "super shock," which essentially forces any particulates to the bottom of the pool to be filtered out. The hope is to reopen by mid-afternoon Thursday, but we're not making any guarantees. Even though our pump room and filter system is new from last year, Mother Nature is a tricky thing, especially when you're dealing wit

The Eagle Nest directories are here!

Image
The Eagle Nest neighborhood directory is free Yes, the 2013-14 Eagle Nest directories are finally finished. The format is similar to last year's, and includes color images of all the birds represented in our neighborhood street names. Distribution has begun and should be finished in the next two weeks. So far, residents of Bittern Lane, Warbler Way, Shrike Court and half of Tanager Lane have gotten their directories. It's a slow delivery process, and here's why: The board is hand-delivering them in person to save postage. It also gives us a chance to doublecheck lot numbers, addresses, and collect emails so residents can be updated on neighborhood happenings, crime alerts, etc. (So ... if you see a sweaty guy with a goatee and wearing a backpack, don't call the police. It's probably your friendly board president Scott Thien making the rounds. ... Thanks.) If you get your directory and see something that needs correcting, or have a suggestion about content

Eagle Nest pool has reopened!

The Eagle Nest pool has reopened! Thanks for your patience and understanding as Pool Manager Susan Anderson and her staff worked to rid the water of a green tint. We apologizie for the day and a half closure, but resident safety comes first. Actually, there never was a health issue -- simply a green algae bloom that needed a chemical "super shock" treatment to clear things up. Healthwise, the green water was safe to swim in, but limited visibility in the water meant the lifeguards couldn't do their jobs effectively so we closed the pool for further treatment. Suffice to say, our green pool water was cleaner than any Indiana lake or river! If you swing by the pool today, you'll notice a big improvement! See you Sunday for the annual ENPOA Pool Party! -- Submitted by Scott Thien

Eagle Nest Pool Party is Aug. 4

Sunday, August 4, is the date for Eagle Nest's Annual Pool Party from 1-4 p.m. Once again,  we will provide fried chicken from Kroger, and all residents are asked to bring a side dish of some kind.  We will have water, lemonade, and beer for the adults.  The lifeguards will have games for the kids with prizes. As previously noted on this blog, don't let the green water scare you. Pool Manager Susan Anderson assures us that the water is safe and not cold. She is hopeful the green tint will dissipate by Sunday. So come celebrate the end of summer for the school kids, meet your fellow neighbors and enjoy the temperate weather at our fabulous clubhouse and pool. -- Submitted by Alice Miley

Pool is open, a little green but safe

If you've been to the pool lately, you might have noticed the green water caused by algae. No worries, says Pool Manager Susan Anderson in a recent email: "It is starting to die off and should be gone in a day or so. Despite the appearance of the pool, it is perfectly safe to be in, our chemicals are within proper ranges, and we have passed both the Marion County random inspection this week and our weekly lab test. It's just a waiting game at this point, but working toward correction!" The algae crept in after a recent pump room leak. The pool drained by more than half and as a result needed to be refilled with fresh water. As you can guess, it takes a while to treat 83,000 gallons of water! So, for the next day or two, pretend you're swimming in one of Indiana's green lakes -- only our water is treated and chemically safe! -- Submitted by Scott Thien

Bounce House at Family Fun Night

Looking for something to do with the kids Thursday night? Come down to the Clubhouse and check out our Bounce House during Family Fun Night! (July 25). The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. The Bounce House is open to all ages, but will be enjoyed by kids in the same general age and size so no one gets hurt. Best of all, the Bounce House is free! After that, hop in the pool for a cool dip! Family Fun Nights are a great way to meet your neighbors and enjoy the best of our Clubhouse amenities. Our Social Committee has done a fantastic job with weekly/monthly activities -- and the bounce house is among the last this summer season. Previous Family Fun Nights included themes of tie-dye T-shirts, ice cream, balloons, Marco's pizza and cupcakes. We even had a food truck stop by! Hundreds of residents have joined in the activities, a great way to build community and socialize. Stay tuned for details on our upcoming annual Pool Party on August 4. You don't want to miss it! -- Submit

Kelly Wright named Clubhouse Manager

Image
Eagle Nest resident Kelly Wright was named as the new Clubhouse Manager on Sunday night at the monthly board meeting.  Kelly most recently has been serving Eagle Nest as Activities Co-coordinator. Kelly has a degree in business management and has a variety of work experience, including party planning and office clerical work. She has been living with her family in Eagle Nest for eight years. Kelly will assume her new position on August 1. She will be in charge of the clubhouse and the common areas. To contact Kelly to rent the clubhouse, or to report common grounds issues, email her at kellygwright @yahoo.com. Her phone number is (317) 847-7928. The ENPOA board wishes to thank all applicants for this job. We were very impressed with the residents who applied and hope that they will continue to be involved in the neighborhood. The board would also like to thank again Carolyn Goldennetz for her many years of outstanding service as the Clubhouse Manager.  You will be missed, Carolyn

BRAG reports new crime activity in area

Click here for new postings about crime activity in our area , mainly car breakins and tool thefts from back yard sheds. The reports come from BRAG, the Binford Redevelopment and Growth organization, of which Eagle Nest sits on the outer-most fringe. Luckily, Eagle Nest hasn't been affected by crime lately, but criminals have no boundaries. If you see something suspicious, call 911 or IMPD at 327-3811. Again, if you see something, say something! Residents are encouraged to join BRAG's Crime Watch email string so you can stay plugged in to area incidents. Send an email to crimewatch@binford71.org and request to be added for free.  Granted, Eagle Nest rarely shows up in the reports -- mainly because we have such an active community of walkers, bikers and attentive residents -- and we want to keep it that way. Get plugged in!

Food Truck at Family Fun Night at Pool

Family Fun Nights continue at the Eagle Nest Pool on Thursday night, July 18, from 6-9 p.m  The food truck, Dashboard Diner, will be there at 6 p.m. to satisfy your appetite.   The Dashboard Diner is the food truck associated with Edwards Drive-in, a well-known drive-in on South Sherman.  Edwards Drive-in has been featured on the TV Show "Man vs Food". The menu for the food truck includes their famous breaded tenderloin, their Big E burger, BBQ, Coney dogs, breaded chicken filet, fried pickles, onion rings, and French fries.  They have Coke products and their homemade root beer. The Family Fun nights have been well attended.  Last week's tye-dying activity drew about 70 participants. So come join your neighbors for a fun night at the pool and let someone else do the cooking!

Public hearing Tuesday on East 82nd Street widening project

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) plans a public hearing and open house on Tuesday, July 9, to discuss the proposed 82nd Street widening project. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the Abundant Life Church, 7606 E. 82nd St. The proposal seeks to widen 82nd Street to five lanes (two in each direction, with a middle turning lane) from Hague Road east to Sargeant Road, eventually stretching all the way to Fall Creek Road. It is not clear whether sidewalks are part of the plan, however crosswalks are planned at the entrance of Mary Castle Elementary School. The public is invited to attend, and interested residents will be allowed 2 minutes each to make public statements about the project. An open house will follow the meeting, allowing residents to meet DPW officials, view displays and ask questions of the project team. For more information about Tuesday's meeting, email autumn.gasior@indy.gov or call (317) 327-8699. Given this project affects a key entrance to ou

New members elected to Eagle Nest board of directors

Congratulations to new and returning Eagle Nest Directors Mike Lathrop, Judith Buddenbaum and Brad Bobich. The trio was elected during ENPOA's annual meeting at the Clubhouse on Sunday, June 23. Mike is returning for his second two-year term, while Judith and Brad will be serving their first terms. Their responsibilities include attending monthly board meetings (currently held Sunday evenings) and voting on key neighborhood business. Each will serve a two-year term, a volunteer post lasting until June 2015. ( Click here to read their bios in a previous post .) A full list of directors is listed under the "Contacts" tab on the right of the page. A total of 48 ballots were cast -- about 1/8 of eligible residents -- in one of the largest voting returns in recent memory. Three residents attended the annual meeting. The board of directors also voted to elect Scott Thien as president, and Mike Lathrop as vice president. Scott has been acting president since the beginning

Eagle Nest girl's bike stolen. Have you seen it?

Image
Have  you seen this child's bike? It was stolen the afternoon of Saturday, June 15, from the bike rack  at the Eagle Nest pool. Sadly, the bike was a birthday present -- and it was stolen the same day as her birthday! If you have any information about the bike or its location, please contact the girl's father Mark at 361-8084 or ENPOA President Scott Thien at scottthien@comcast.net or at 902-3103. If you wish to return the bike anonymously, please leave it at the clubhouse bike rack and the lifeguards will make sure that it is returned to the owner.

Eagle Nest seeks candidates for Clubhouse manager

The ENPOA Board of Directors is accepting applications to fill the paid position of Clubhouse Manager. Longtime manager Carolyn Goldenetz recently announced her resignation after more than seven years on the job -- one of Eagle Nest's longest serving clubhouse managers. In her letter to the board, she wrote: "Resigning has been on my heart for over a year and I finally came to a point where something needed to give. ... This position has been wonderful and I'm thankful for the time I had serving our great community." Carolyn's resignation is effective July 1, 2013, but she has graciously volunteered to be a resource until a replacement is found. Suffice to say, Carolyn did an excellent job maintaining the clubhouse and common grounds (including the tennis courts, basketball courts, playsets, entrance signs, among other things), as well as scheduling clubhouse rentals and working with various contractors including snow plowing. Her energy, enthusiasm, a

Beware of "lookalike" social media site for Eagle Nest

Several residents recently have been contacted about a private social media website called "eaglenest.nextdoor.com" The site asks residents to create a user name and password and provide contact information to access a free portal for news, information, comments, crime reports, etc. This is an independent effort led by a resident but NOT an official communications tool endorsed by the Eagle Nest Board of Directors. Residents are free to join if they like, of course, but ENPOA is not affiliated with nextdoor.com and cannot vouch or be held responsible for the content posted therein. ENPOA is working to improve the longtime lack of communication in the neighborhood by incorporating several modern tools, namely social media ( Facebook; click here for link ), the internet ( blog; click here for link ) and email (electronic newsletter; To join, send your email address to Secretary/bookkeeper Chris'e Van Meter at enpoa_sec@att.net ). We'd like to fully develop those to

Also, a headsup that the Eagle Nest Annual Meeting is set for June 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Clubhouse. Board elections -- three candidates seek to fill three open spots -- also will be held at that time, with new members announced at the end of the meeting. As always, any Eagle Nest resident is welcome to attend our board meetings -- a great way to meet your neighbors, share your questions/suggestions/concerns, and see what it takes to run a neighborhood our size. -- Submitted by Scott Thien

Check out our new BRAG crime reports

The Eagle Nest Board has been researching several methods to improve neighborhood security. Among them: subscribing to the Binford Redevelopment And Growth program's Crime Watch email alerts. Simply bookmark the following link -- BRAG Crime Watch reports -- and stay up-to-date on crime in our area. Technically, Eagle Nest sits on the fringe of the BRAG district, however crime knows no boundaries. For example, did you know there was a breakin May 29 in Castleton Estates? That's pretty close to our neighborhood. Check the link for more info. Also, a reminder: Eagle Nest is looking for a neighborhood Crime Watch coordinator. Click here for more information. If interested, contact ENPOA President Scott Thien at 902-3103 or at scottthien@comcast.net In the meantime, residents are urged to call 911 if they see anything suspicious. Your neighbors will thank you. Remember the saying, "If you see something, say something." -- Submitted by Scott Thien

ENPOA seeks Crime Watch coordinator

We live in a great, safe neighborhood. And we'd all like to keep it that way. Unfortunately, crime knows no boundaries. While Eagle Nest has been fortunate to avoid the chronic crime problems found in surrounding neighborhoods, we aren't immune. We've had our share of problems in recent years, too, mainly break-ins, car vandalism and thefts. In fact, about a month ago, a Bittern Lane resident had her door kicked in one Saturday afternoon, her jewelry stolen and house trashed. That's why the Eagle Nest board of directors is looking for a Crime Watch Coordinator. We're looking for a volunteer willing to build up, lead and direct our corps of block captains, cultivate relationships with local law enforcement agencies and find ways to engage neighbors to look out for one another. All this isn't because Eagle Nest has a serious crime problem, because we don't don't. We just want to stay ahead of the problem. In the meantime, the Eagle Nest board is disc

Simply email a short bio and your campaign “platform” – goals for the neighborhood – by then to ENPOA Secretary/Bookkeeper Chris’e Van Meter at enpoa_sec@att.net or drop off your information at the clubhouse mailbox at 8075 Teel Way. Ballots will be distributed to residents in June (bios will be posted on this site, too). The vote count will be during the annual ENPOA meeting at the clubhouse June 23. New directors will take office in July. Questions? Call acting President Scott Thien, or click this link for more information.

Eagle Nest Activities Coordinators introduced

Angi Corkwell and Kelly Wright have volunteered to work as Activities Coordinators for Eagle Nest.  Many activities have been planned for this year, and the hope is that more Eagle Nest neighbors will get to know each other through these events. The board thanks these volunteers for their efforts in making Eagle Nest a great neighborhood!  Angela Corkwell (Pictured left) I was born and raised here in Lawrence, and graduated from Lawrence North.  I am a Ball State Alumni, and currently managing my family business, The Heidelberg Haus. My husband Charlie and I have lived in Eagles Nest since 2005 and have two little girls ages 3 and 6 and a crazy puppy.  I love to travel, spend time with my family, and being outdoors. I am very excited about all the upcoming events that we have planned for this summer season and getting the chance to meet more residents of this awesome neighborhood.  Kelly Wright My husband, Eric, and I have lived in the neighborhood fo

3 Eagle Nest board openings in June; candidates sought

Do you want Eagle Nest to remain one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city? Do you enjoy our subdivision’s top-notch amenities and feel it’s time to give back? Ever wanted an active role in guiding the neighborhood toward a successful future? Here’s how: Run for the board of Eagle Nest Property Owners Association. Three director positions open in June, and we need volunteers to run. Board President Jason Herche has resigned as president for personal reasons, director Billie Sagers is moving, and director Mike Lathrop's term is up. Once the board is in place an election for president and vice president will be conducted. Terms are volunteer and last two years, but the responsibilities are minimal, really. Simply attend monthly board meetings (currently early Sunday evenings) and vote on key neighborhood business. You also will have an opportunity to serve on various volunteer committees dedicated to improving the neighborhood and serving our residents. That’s it.

Reminder: ENPOA dues are due May 1

A quick reminder that Eagle Nest Property Association dues of $350 are due by May 1. Please submit payment to the address listed on the dues letter. As previously posted on this blog, the ENPOA Board of Directors was able to offer a $40 credit to each homeowner, resulting in the lowest dues amount in nearly a decade! The board is confident this reduction will in no way impact the services or quality of living our neighborhood has to offer. This is a one-time credit, however, and cannot be guaranteed in the future, given unforeseen budgetary needs. The regular dues amount of $390 was set by previous ENPOA boards, yet through diligent cost containment and effective management your directors have been able to offer credits the past three years. If payment is not received by June 1, ENPOA will turn your account over to our attorney for collection and a late fee and interest will be charged. Once the account is transferred to the lawyers, it's out of our hands. If yo

Trivia Night for Adults - April 12

Eagle Nest's social committee has planned the first evening event for adults in our clubhouse on Friday, April 12, at 7 p.m.   This is a trivia contest for teams of four people, so find some smart neighbors and form a team!  There will be a minimal $5 entry fee for each team which will be the prize for the winning team.   Not all of the team members have to be Eagle Nest residents either; just as long as at least two members of the team live in Eagle Nest.  Also, come up with a creative name for your team.   The social committee will provide all the snacks, but bring your own alcoholic drinks.   Email your team to board member Alice Miley by April 8th - alicemiley23@gmail.com

Eagle Nest Easter Egg Hunt is a success!

Scouting for Food Drive scheduled for Sunday, April 7

Now that the snow has stopped -- which hopefully will melt by the weekend -- we're back on track for our Scouting for Food drive. On Sunday afternoon, April 7, neighborhood Cub Scout Pack 520 will be canvassing Eagle Nest to collect non-perishable food items. The scouts, accompanied by their parents, will be in search of donations for the Paw Pantry food pantry at Fall Creek Valley Middle School. The food pantry currently serves 19 Fall Creek Valley families, some of whom live in our area. The Paw Pantry uses your donations to provide nutritious and easy to cook food items that students can take home to their families on Friday afternoons. If you have items you would like to contribute, please leave them on the front step of your home clearly marked as "Scouting for Food". For your convenience, items also may be dropped at the Eagle Nest Clubhouse during the afternoon. Look for the drop box on the clubhouse's front step. The Eagle Nest Board endorses thi

Snow is coming -- keep our streets clear

Eagle Nest neighbors, As you know, a snow storm is expected to hit Indianapolis later today, with possible accumulations ranging from 4-7 inches. (We're hoping for less, of course) Please keep the roads clear so our snow plow contractors can do their jobs effectively. Please move your vehicles into your driveways and garages so plowing can occur without interference. Neither the Eagle Nest board nor it plowing contractors will be responsible for vehicles that are "plowed in" on streets. Further, please use extra caution when driving through the neighborhood and allow for extra stopping time at all intersections. The board will order salt for slick spots, as needed. Lastly, please be patient for the roads to be cleared. We have a big neighborhood and it takes time to plow all our roads. Further, we aren't our contractors' only customer, so we'll be in line like everyone else. To read more about Eagle Nest's snow plowing policy (revised January 20

Do you recognize this lost dog?

Image
** UPDATE** No one came forward to claim this dog, so he was taken to the Hamilton County Animal Shelter where he was quickly adopted by a new family. .......................................................... This young male bloodhound dog was found 2/21/13 in the Fountain Villages neighborhood off 86th Street, just south of Geist Landing. He had a bright orange metal tie attached to his choke chain, but no collar or microchip. If you recognize him or know his owner, please contact Julie Dunlap by phone at 696-1035. (Julie messaged your favorite neighborhood association blog in hopes an Eagle Nest resident could help find the dog's home). Submitted by Scott Thien

Do you compost? Want to learn how?

These might seem like crazy questions in mid-February, but spring will be here before you know it and that means time to prepare the garden, flower beds, landscape plantings and more. The Eagle Nest Garden Club is ready to dig in, too. Next month, on March 11, the club will host local composting expert Keith O'Dell during its regular monthly  meeting. O'Dell, of Fishers, will share tips on composting, and how red worms can benefit the organic process and improve the overall health of your landscape. Read more about O'Dell's work on his website: www.castawaycompost.com The garden club meets at 7 p.m. the second Monday of every month at the Clubhouse. The meetings are free and open to any Eagle Nest resident. Questions may be directed to club president Claudette Lane at jklane@att.net Submitted by Scott Thien

Before you start your property improvements, contact the Eagle Nest R&R committee

As spring approaches, the Eagle Nest Board reminds residents that our covenants require all property owners obtain advance approval of any property improvements, additions, renovations or installations. The latter reference includes but is not limited to fences, decks, mini-barns and porches. Written requests should to be submitted the Review and Restriction Committee 30 days before construction begins to afford proper review and written approval. Written approval from the committee is recommended to avoid any corrective actions that may require additional materials, costs or affect your project’s scheduled completion. Here’s what’s required: 1) Two (2) complete sets of plans and specifications for the proposed construction or improvement. 2) Such plans shall include plot plans showing the location of existing improvements and the location of the proposed improvement to be constructed or placed upon the lot, each properly and clearly designated. 3) Such plans and specification

Keep EN pets controlled

This is a reminder to dog owners in the neighborhood that dogs are to be kept reasonably confined by a leash or by a fence.  Dogs should not be a nuisance to residents walking in the neighborhood. There have been reports of dogs causing anxious moments for neighbors walking on the sidewalk.  All pet owners need to be good neighbors by being considerate of other residents. Eagle Nest residents can contact the Mayor's Action Line at (317) 327-4622 for questions or issues relative to Animal Care and Control in Marion County. Submitted by Alice Miley

Recycling services available in Eagle Nest

Every other week, many residents of Eagle Nest set out big blue recycling containers filled with items that are recycled instead of adding to their garbage waste.  Republic Services has offered this service to our neighborhood for many years.  Every family's goal should be to reduce the amount of trash produced; curbside pick-up is a convenient way to accomplish this. Republic Services recycles everything except styrofoam.  This includes all plastics 1-7, glass, aluminum cans, plastic sacks (including the newspaper bags), all paper, and cardboard that includes food boxes like cereals and cake mixes.  They pick up every other week (on our Monday trash day), and the charge is $19.50 for three months.  They give customers the 96 gallon blue recycling container. Citizens shouldn't have to pay for recycling.  Indianapolis is very behind other communities in not rewarding citizens for recycling, but that will undoubtedly change in the future.  Many Eagle Nest residents who want

Could you be a target for crime?

Do you want to learn how you can protect your home and personal property and increase the safety in our neighborhood? The Binford Redevelopment and Growth Association (BRAG) is hosting a free anti-crime seminar Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at St. Mathhew's Church, 56th and Binford Blvd. The event is presented by the Multi-Jurisdictional Offender Strategy Team (M.O.S.T.) and will be conducted by Marion County Deputy Prosecutors Annie Martens and Daphne Whitmire. Eagle Nest dues letters mailed

By now, all Eagle Nest residents should have received their 2013 Annual Dues Letter in mail. And there's good news: The amount due has been reduced! Well sort of ... The ENPOA Board of Directors was able to offer a $40 credit to each homeowner, resulting in a total dues amount of $350. That's the lowest dues have been in nearly a decade! This is a one-time credit, however, and cannot be guaranteed in the future, given unforeseen budgetary needs. The regular dues amount of $390 was set by previous ENPOA boards, yet through diligent cost containment and effective management your directors have been able to offer credits the past three years. Please note: Dues are due by May 1. If payment is not received by June 1, ENPOA will turn your account over to our attorney for collection and a late fee and interest will be charged. Once the account is transferred to the lawyers, it's out of our hands -- and could be quite expensive for those who don't pay on time. Your ENPO

Crime alert: Castle Cove breakin reported

A residence on Bayview Point was broken into about 11 a.m. (Tuesday, Jan 8). The following details are from a neighbor who witnessed the crime, as provided by the Castle Cove Crime Watch: "A black Dodge Ram 1500 with chrome wheels and trim driven by a man wearing a large heavy coat pulled into the driveway. The passenger, wearing low-slung jeans with a chain, got out of the truck talking on the phone and then went to the front door. After no one answered, he signaled the driver, who put the hood of his coat over his head and got out of the truck. Both men were black and appeared to be in their 30s. They kicked in the front door, and police say they went straight to the master bedroom (common practice, because this is where most residents keep jewelry, cash, credit cards, guns, etc.). Jewelry and a computer were taken. Three patrol cars responded but the burglars had already left having been in and out very quickly. The resident had locked the dog away before she left
