Sahm Pool’s closing a reminder of staffing challenges

As operators of one of the largest private neighborhood pools on the Northeastside, the Eagle Nest Board was saddened to hear about the recent closure of nearby Sahm Aquatic Center and Pool due to lack of staff.

“Sahm is one of the largest pools in the city and requires more staff to safely operate than any other pool,” the park wrote recently in a Facebook post.

“That’s a challenge every year, however this season it was impossible due to the park manager role being vacant for over a year despite multiple offers and rounds of interviews for the position. The Park Manager role is currently posted, and we are actively recruiting for it.”

Until the pool reopens patrons have been directed to use the pool at Broad Ripple Park this summer – 7 miles away.

What does that mean for Eagle Nest? The Board reminds residents that an active pool fob is the only way to access our facility – no exceptions. For liability reasons, our lifeguards have been instructed to deny entry to anyone without an active fob, so please do not let in non-residents or allow uninvited patrons to follow you into the facility.

If you did not receive your fob or have lost it, please contact Administrative Pool Manager Andrew Taylor at andrewtaylor574@gmail.com

We are grateful for our lifeguards and pool management team and the vital service they provide, especially given the national shortage of certified lifeguards. According to the American Lifeguard Association, one-third of the country’s public pools have remained closed or had to shorten their hours. Here in Eagle Nest, we remain open daily from noon to 8 p.m., thanks to our excellent pool team.

Of course, our pool is not without challenges. Our 50-year-old facility is showing its age, including the problematic baby wading pool, but we still are thankful to have a facility for our families and residents to enjoy this summer. Your help in maintaining facility security will help ensure that.

Thank you, and please let our team know if you have any questions or comments.

On behalf of the Board,
Scott Thien, President
