National Night Out is Aug. 5: Scoop Shack fundraiser to support nearby IMPD substation
Eagle Nest is joining other neighborhoods for ice cream on Tuesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for National Night Out, the annual community-building campaign.
The Aug. 5 event, usually held on the first Tuesday in August, promotes
police-community partnerships and neighborhood connections.
The local gathering is sponsored by Binford Redevelopment and Growth (BRAG) at the Scoop Shack, 7002 Lake Plaza (71st and Binford). Scoop Shack is donating 20 percent of its sales during the event to support the IMPD substation at 75th and Shadeland.
IMPD North District leadership and officers will be on hand to visit with neighbors and offer crime prevention ideas and safety materials, including gun locks.
"This is a good chance to get out, meet our neighbors and join this effort to build community spirit," said Scott Thien, President of the Eagle Nest Property Owners Association and a 20-year resident of the development. "And ice cream in August is never a bad idea."
Eagle Nest has a Crime Watch group to monitor data on police reports, help educate residents on crime-prevention measures and work with law enforcement. In the Northeast Indy area of 30 neighborhoods represented by BRAG, the most recent data show a decrease in robberies, assaults and vehicle thefts, but an increase in breaking and entering -- a "June surge" the police say also occurred last year.
Eagle Nest and the neighborhoods near Hague Road and 82nd Street have relatively few reported crimes, according to police and the City Protect website, which maps incident reports.
Eagle Nest Crime Watch is organizing a fall neighborhood forum to discuss public safety in the neighborhood and share ideas with IMPD officers. Please watch the blog for updates, and let us know if you have questions. In the meantime, we hope to see you for ice cream on Tuesday
