ENPOA hires LN assistant coach as new pool manager

Just in time for the upcoming pool season, ENPOA has hired a Lawrence North High School assistant coach as the neighborhood’s new pool manager.

Susan Anderson, a longtime Northeastside resident with more than 23 years of pool experience in two states, will replace Mike Penrose, who resigned earlier this year for personal reasons. As part of his outgoing duties, Mike has graciously offered to advise Susan on the Eagle Nest clubhouse’s pool operations, mechanics and pool products.

Highlights of Susan’s credentials and experience:

> Since 2010, Susan has been an assistant swim coach Lawrence North High School.

> Since 2003, Susan has been Lawrence Swim Team’s (LST) developmental swim coach, charged with coordinating and implementing daily practices; developing motivational strategies; monitoring and tracking swimmers’ progress; and working with parents and coaches to develop the club and community relations.

> Since 2007, Susan has been LN’s lifeguard coordinator, charged with hiring, scheduling and managing staff for all the school’s swim team and Indy Starz Diving team practices and competitions.

> From 1993 to 2001, Susan worked at the Castleton Estates neighborhood pool, charged with developing and implementing swim lessons; training lifeguards; and maintaining pool water quality and chemical balance.

> From 1982 to 1988, Susan worked a variety of roles for the Glen Briar Park District in Glen Ellyn, Ill. Duties in included assistant pool manager; head swim coach, managing a team of 70 swimmers ages 5-18; and lifeguard.

> Susan is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association, holding a Level II certification. She also is certified in Red Cross CPR and first aid.

Susan has five returning life guards, and she has hired an additional six guards to ensure the safety of Eagle Nest residents and their guests.

In her words:

Question: What connections do you have to Eagle Nest?
Answer: “I have three daughters, two of whom have worked as lifeguards at Eagle Nest. Kristen has been a guard at the pool for the past five summers, Meghan for the past three. My youngest daughter, Taryn, will be guarding this summer as well. Additionally, a lot of the younger kids in the neighborhood swim for LST, where I have been their coach at some point over the years.”

Question: What are your goals/what do you hope to bring to the neighborhood’s pool?
Answer: “I’d like to see the pool utilized more, maybe keep it open later in the evenings a couple of nights a week and do something themed or more family oriented. I have such great memories of fun days at the pool when I was a kid, and I want all kids to have those same types of fun memories!”

Question: Why did you apply for the job?
Answer: “I love to be around people, and my ‘real job’ is running a daycare, primarily for teachers’ children, so I have a lot of free time in the summer. Because all my own kids spend most of the time at the pool, I figured this way I’d get to see them more!”

ENPOA pool manager Susan Anderson can be reached at (317) 371-4275 or at sbkmtanderson@att.net

Aside from our residents, our pool is one of the neighborhood’s biggest assets – and Mike is a big reason for its continued success. The ENPOA sincerely thanks Mike for his 10 years of service, commitment and dedication to the neighborhood. We'll miss you, Mike!
