Board Update: Labor Day Dog Swim, free snow cones, recycling pickup resumes, Chef TLC coming Tuesday

Hello Eagle Nest residents,

Here is the latest neighborhood news for the week of August 30:

FINAL WEEK FOR POOL OPERATION – FUN LABOR DAY EVENTS!

A reminder that that this is the final full week of operation for our community Pool. Hours are 4-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The last day of operation will be Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6. Hours will be noon to 6 p.m., so join us for one last summer dip in the Pool!

To celebrate the holiday, the Board is excited to announce the following events:

NEW ALL-DOG SWIM:
Here’s a family photo op you don’t want to miss: Bring your dog for a dip in Pool on Labor Day! That’s right, after our community Pool closes for the season at 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 6, pet owners are welcome to bring their furry family members for a swim in the main and baby wading pools, from 6 to 7 p.m. only. All owners must present proof of rabies vaccination for their pets (i.e., collar tags or docs) before entrance.

Lifeguards will be on duty in case pet owners want to join their pets in the water. This is intended to be family event, so no aggressive, disruptive animals, please. And as a courtesy to neighbors, no pets in the Pool deck area until 8 p.m. We also ask pet owners to keep their pets on a leash when not in the pool, and to pick up after pets if they soil the grounds. We hope you and Fido have fun!

FREE KONA ICE SNOW CONES:
To celebrate the end of another successful Pool season, the Board is happy to announce we’ll be giving away free snow cone cups on Labor Day, courtesy of Kona Ice.

That’s right, for one hour only – 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6 at the Clubhouse – every resident is welcome to stop by and grab an icy treat. Kids will love the self-serve, flavor pouring station (above) offering a variety of options. (One snow cup per person, please). Kona Ice has been in big demand this summer, so we were lucky to snag this time slot on Kona’s calendar. Don’t be late, don’t miss out!

Lastly, thanks to all residents for your cooperation this year in observing the Pool rules and COVID-19 measures, sharing operational concerns and suggestions, and keeping those Pool tags handy. A reminder to check the lost-and-found collection (right) under the back deck, including goggles, towels, flip flops, shirts and more. Please retrieve your items by Labor Day. After that, everything will be donated to Goodwill Industries. Questions? Contact Pool Manager Sam Burns at samantha.burns51@gmail.com.

Pool Manager Samantha Burns and the lifeguard staff did an outstanding job keeping our residents safe this year, including teaching four full capacity swim lesson sessions and maintaining the highest water quality standards despite an aging filtration system. Please be sure to thank the team for their service. We wouldn’t have been open without them!

IS YOUR RECYCLING BIN OVERFLOWING? PICKUP IS TUESDAY!

If you’re a Republic recycling customer, don’t forget to put your recycling cart out on Tuesday, August 31. That’s the day pickups are supposed to be back on track after a two-week delay. Several neighbors who called Republic to complain about missed service were told excess recycling would be picked up on the same day, although it wasn’t clear if the items could be left outside full carts.

Unfortunately, trash and recycling services are outside Eagle Nest control, but we encourage you to call Republic to voice your opinion about its service. You also might try requesting a partial credit to your bill for the missed service and inconvenience. Republic’s phone number is 317-917-7300.

OUR FINAL FOOD TRUCK EVENT IS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

All good things come to an end, as the saying goes. Tuesday, Sept. 7, is our final Food Truck Tuesday event of 2021. Closing our season: Chef TLC, the same longtime vendor who kicked things off earlier this spring. Actually, Chef TLC isn’t a truck – it’s a bus, and it’s filled with all your favorite comfort foods, cooked fresh and made to order: burgers, Indy steak and cheese hoagies, grilled chicken sandwiches, wraps and tenders -- even a meatless Beyond Burger! Must-have sides include sweet potato or regular fries, onion petals, fried mushrooms and fried cheese ravioli. Oh, and Chef TLC is bringing homemade peach cobbler. OMG. Find and follow Chef TLC on social: Facebook and Instagram.

Don’t worry, Eagle Nest is far from a food desert. Through September, we’ll have $5 Jet’s Pizza, 5-7 p.m. every Thursday at the Clubhouse. Cash only for sausage, pepperoni or cheese options. We’re negotiating with Jet’s to continue weekly or bi-weekly sales through the holidays, so stay tuned for more info about that.

MEET THE NEIGHBORS: THE CORBETTS AND DISC-CATCHING HOLLY

Tom and Cindy Corbett's two sons are grown and gone, but their newest “child” keeps them busy -- to the delight of the neighborhood.

Holly, a border collie and Australian shepherd mix, plays catch with a flying disc - streaking across the yard, leaping into the air and running back to Tom for toss after toss.

The Corbetts have been in the neighborhood for 25 years and are previous winners of the annual Holiday Lights contest. Both are educators for Lawrence Township schools: He's a business teacher at McKenzie Career Center, and Cindy is a visual impairment specialist.

They lost their 14-year-old lab and got Holly two years ago as a puppy.

“We went from that nice, relaxed dog to a little bit more energy,” Tom said. “My daughter-in-law found her. She sent us a picture and we fell in love with her. She's smart as can be, and I've taken her for agility work and to some herding classes.”

Holly needs about an hour each day for fetching, walks or other exercise. For her classes, she worked on herding sheep. Nowadays for practice, Holly has started herding other critters -- the Corbetts' grandchildren. Video: Click here to see a Tom and Holly in action.
