Board Update: Santa visits Eagle Nest (photos!), Jet’s Pizza this week, poll results on picnic tables, crime updates

Hello Eagle Nest residents,

Here’s a look at neighborhood news for the week of December 28:

DOZENS MEET SANTA DURING EAGLE NEST VISIT
Yes, that was Santa riding through the neighborhood on Christmas Eve, greeting residents and throwing out bags of candy from a pickup (his sleigh was in the repair shop getting ready for the big night). More than two dozen families met the jolly old guy (aka resident Tom Corbett); Mrs. Claus (aka Tom’s wife Cindy); elf helper (resident Lindsey Dix-Holmes); driver (aka Jack O’Tain, who donated his decorated pickup for the tour); and navigator (aka Board member Helen Galvin). Volunteers like them underscore why Eagle Nest is one of the best neighborhoods around! Missed the excitement? Click here for a gallery of Santa’s visit.

RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE AT SAHM PARK
Now through January 31, 2021, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) and Indy Parks will accept live Christmas trees for recycling at Sahm Park (6801 E. 91st Street, in the parking lot near the aquatics center). A few guidelines:
  • Trees must be free of ornaments, tinsel, tree stands and all other decorative materials.
  • Trees should be dropped off only at the designated area within the park, and only between dawn and dusk.
  • The live tree recycling program is not for commercial use, and is solely for Marion County residents.
DPW and Indy Parks recycle the trees for landscaping resources such as mulch and soil blends. Last year, 7,234 Christmas trees were chipped for park use.

DECEMBER 29: JET’S PIZZA CAPS 2020 FOOD TRUCK SEASON
Jet’s Pizza started our food truck season, so it’s only fitting they close it out. On December 29, Jet’s returns for the final time this year to sell their popular $5 personal pizzas. You know the drill: 5 to 7 p.m. in the front Clubhouse parking lot. Choice of sausage, pepperoni or cheese. Cash only. Get there early, because once they’re gone they’re gone. As always, please observe CDC guidelines on social distancing and mask use, and use caution entering and exiting the Clubhouse parking lot.

POLL: RESIDENTS SAY YES TO PLAYGROUND PICNIC TABLES
One of our recent Constant Contact poll questions asked, “Would you like to see picnic tables installed near the playground?” The results from our 60 respondents was an overwhelming yes. The results:
  • Yes – 91.7% (It would be easier to enjoy lunches while the kids played nearby.)
  • No – 8.3% (I enjoy sitting on the ground with the ants.)
The Board’s take: We’ve been thinking about installing tables for several years, but unexpected repairs like pool pump room mechanicals and Clubhouse deck repairs popped up. Now that those big-ticket items are completed, we’ll be moving on to other projects, like landscaping and grounds, improved facilities access and more. If you have suggestions, email any Board member. And if you want to be added to our Constant Contact blast, email scottthien@comcast.net and we’ll get you plugged in.

In other news:

DOLLAR TREE SHOOTING: In case you hadn’t heard, there was a shooting December 22 at the Dollar Tree store in Shadeland Station (ironically, just doors down from the new police substation). Police were called to a robbery in progress about 8:50 p.m. and arrived to find a male employee shot in a back office. The employee was forced to the back of the store where a scuffle ensued, and he was shot one time. The victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The suspect is described as a 30-year-old black male in a green sweatshirt and black mask. The suspect fled on foot. If you have any information about this incident call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477). You can remain anonymous.

The Board wishes everyone a healthy and happy New Year!

On behalf of the Board,
