Board Update: “Meet the Neighbors” series spotlights Tanager Court family, suspicious photographer on Warbler

Hello Eagle Nest residents,

Here is a look at neighborhood news for the week of March 15:

SUSPICIOUS MAIL INCIDENT ON TEEL, PHOTOGRAPHER ON WARBLER WAY

This afternoon, Monday, March 15, a resident in the 7700 block of Teel Way noticed a black SUV traveling North on Teel Way stopping at every mail box and either taking or delivering items. It seemed odd, according to the resident, because it did not appear to be an official postal vehicle.

This incident comes on the heels of last week’s report of a suspicious person who walked onto the driveway of a home in the 8400 block of Tanager Lane to take photos of vehicles. Nothing was taken and no one was hurt, and the trespasser drove away in a blue minivan/SUV-type vehicle.

Turns out, a resident on Warbler Way reported a similar incident that same week, so please keep your vehicles locked and ensure valuables are out of sight at all times.

These three incidents may be unrelated, but regardless, if you see something suspicious, please call 911 immediately. Also, please contact Crime Watch coordinator Carolyn Goldenetz at goldenetz@gmail.com so she can keep tabs on things, as well.

MEET THE NEIGHBORS: Heather and Arlo Meyer look forward to outdoor movie nights and more on Tanager Court

Moving to Eagle Nest five years ago was a welcome homecoming for Heather and Arlo Meyer of Tanager Court. After attending Lawrence Township schools and then graduating from college in 2008, they moved to Seattle for a few years and then to Chicago for graduate school.

“When we were trying to figure out what our next step was, Heather ended up getting a job here in Indy and we decided to move back to be close to family again,” Arlo said.

Heather, a former family therapist with Eskenazi Health, is a program manager for Community Mental Health in Anderson. Arlo is an art teacher at Warren Central High School, teaching jewelry and introduction to art. Their son, Kurt, is 4 years old, and their Labrador retriever mix, Henry, is 6 months.

They’re a busy family, even in a time of social distancing – gardening, bike rides, hikes, yoga, and swimming. They’re looking forward to the return of big public events like the Indianapolis 500, as well as the chance to get out for more road trips, camping and trying new restaurants.

“In the meantime, we have a lot of home improvement projects keeping us busy,” Arlo says. “Those include new siding, gutting bathrooms down to the studs, new flooring, really doing anything to make our house a lot better place to be.”

Folks are friendly here, the Meyers say.

“I love Tanager Court: It’s quiet, but there are kids playing and having fun. I love just the sense of community in our little area. Having a pool and pool house that we have access to is also a huge plus.”

They’re looking forward to the return of summer “outdoor movie nights,” with neighbors and kids gathered in lawn chairs, using the garage door as a screen; and the Tanager Court fireworks display, which Arlo directs. They’ll be glad to play video games again with the Roth family, also on the cul-de-sac.

Eagle Nest is perfectly located and feels like a well-established neighborhood with a variety of home styles and mature trees, they say.

“We are close to a lot of things, but far enough to feel a bit secluded. It’s easy to get to the highways or major places easily,” Arlo says. “Our neighborhood has a lot of different styles of houses and gardens -- and I love the giant trees here.”

He’s a bike rider, and the recently added sidewalks on Hague Road are a big plus.

“It’s great to ride my bike out and through the neighborhoods and get to 96th Street or all the way to Binford -- or when I was really adventurous, all the way to Broad Ripple. It’s just nice to feel connected to the larger area.” – Compiled by John Strauss, Tanager Court resident

POLL: 2/3 OF RESIDENTS REJECT RENTAL PROPERTIES

Last week’s Constant Contact poll asked, “Do you think house rentals should be prohibited in Eagle Nest? (weekly, monthly, annually). The results: 64 responses. Yes, 65.6% (42 respondents), and No, 34.4% (22 respondents).

The Board’s take: At present, there is no language in our controlling documents that prohibits rental properties. And in general, rental residents have been great neighbors over the years. But sometimes their homes and/or landscaping fall into disrepair, and that affects everyone’s property values. The Board has heard from a number of residents over the years asking for more restrictions on rental properties, something the Board may explore in the upcoming year.

A reminder that per the newly adopted Signage Policy (see last week’s blog post), all residents must obtain Board approval before installing yard signs. In addition, all previously approved signs must be cleared by March 31 to ensure they conform to the neighborhood’s updated standards. Click here to read the updated Signage Policy. Questions can be sent to RulesRestrictions@att.net. Thank you for your attention and cooperation.
