July Board update: Proposed covenant change in mailboxes, Tanager lane to be repaved, swimming lessons, Annual Party, Crime Watch event and more!
Proposed neighborhood amendment in mailboxes now!
Finally! After
more than a year of preparation, listening to resident feedback and working
with our legal counsel, we distributed important updates to the neighborhood’s
governing documents. On Sunday, July 12, all lot owners received in their mailbox the
Board’s proposed amendment revision for review and – we hope – your approval.
The proposal, prepared by our legal counsel KSN, seeks to update our controlling documents to address rental properties, street parking, commercial vehicles, and trash carts. Your envelope will contain a cover letter, a copy of the proposed revisions, and a proxy form to cast your vote. Your packet also includes a Fine Policy and Fee Schedule approved by the Board at the June Board meeting.
Simply mark YES or NO for each of the proposed covenant revisions presented and return your ballot in one of the following ways:
- Drop in the Association's secure mailbox at 8075 Teel Way.
- Email a scanned/signed copy to enpoa_sec@att.net
- Hand-deliver your ballot to Chris'e Van Meter at the Clubhouse any Wednesday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Request an appointment at enpoa_sec@att.net.)
For the changes to be legally binding with the state of Indiana, 51% of lot owners (210) need to approve the amendments. The Board recommends passage of ALL the provisions, but we understand residents may have questions. That’s why the Board will dedicate the first 30 minutes of the August and September Board meetings residents to ask questions (Dates TBA). In the meantime, residents are welcome to contact Board President Scott Thien at scottthien@comcast.net with any questions.
Eagle Nest residents have asked for these amendments, and we believe they are in the best interest of the neighborhood at large to preserve the neighborhood’s unique value — along with the continued growth in the value of our homes. We hope you’ll join this effort and send in your proxy vote as soon as you can, ideally in the next 90 days from the date on the cover letter. We have more communications about the revisions in the months ahead, but in the meantime thank you in advance for your support.
(Special thanks to resident volunteers Brandy Schneider, Lynn Hill, Connie McKee, and John Strauss for helping collate and stuff the envelopes, as well as hand-deliver them to mailboxes to save hundreds of dollars in postage!)
Tanager Lane to be repaved in coming weeks, Council rep tells Eagle Nest Board
Tanager Lane,
the neighborhood's gateway from Hague Road and our main east-west artery, will
be repaved in the coming months, according to Nick Roberts, our District 4
City-County Council member. City crews already have begun marking utility lines
in preparation for the work.
"Over the last three years, people have been clear that Tanager Lane needs to be resurfaced to help out Eagle Nest," Roberts (right) told Board Vice President John Strauss. "So, this year I chose Tanager as my one neighborhood road for my whole district to be upgraded.”
The work will stretch from the Hague Road entrance to Teel Way. Eagle Nest Board members and other residents lobbied hard for the resurfacing -- and for urgently needed pothole-patching in the meantime to address the badly deteriorated pavement at the Hague Road entrance, the three-way stop at Warbler Way, and other areas. (Reminder, anyone can request this and other city services through the Mayor's Action Center.)
"We stepped up our lobbying, knowing that people shopping for new homes consider road conditions in judging the quality of neighborhoods,” John said, referencing studies showing that communities that cut road maintenance saw a 9% drop in house prices over a 10-year period.
John added: “The Eagle Nest Board works hard to protect our property values for obvious reasons. Our infrastructure team does that by working with Nick and other city officials to encourage the Department of Public Works to stay on top of street maintenance, and we work with AES to keep the streetlights functioning. We also have been working with Eagle Nest volunteers to update landscaping at all our entrances so that we present an attractive first impression for visitors and prospective home buyers.”
When work starts, residents will need to keep vehicles off the street, so watch our blog and Facebook page for details as we learn them.
Annual Meeting and Board Election highlights
Thank you to the
nearly two dozen residents who attended last month’s Annual Meeting – one of
our largest showings ever. The volunteer Board received a lot of valuable
feedback, and we shared some important updates, including how we process
records requests, our enforcement rights for lot violations, as well as updates
on dues, and our pool and tennis courts. Attendees also got an advance look at
the proposed amendments to our controlling documents.
We also thank KSN for sending a lawyer to help answer questions about the proposed amendments. Again, if you have any questions about the changes, please contact Board President Scott Thien at scottthien@comcast.net.
The Annual Meeting concluded with the re-election of four incumbent Board members: Kim Isaak, Brian Schneider, Scott Thien, Jason Van Meter. The Board re-elected Scott as Board President, and John was elected as Interim Vice President while longtime VP Jason Van Meter settles into a new job. With years of construction and project management experience, Jason has been an invaluable asset to the neighborhood for years, and we’re grateful for his continued service!
How are things at the Pool? They are going swimmingly!
We’re about halfway through the swim season, and like the headline says, things are going pretty well, actually. Facilities Co-Manager Ken Burns and Administrative Co-Manager Andrew Taylor opened the facility on time for Memorial Day. We’re fully staffed with certified lifeguards, with double coverage for many shifts to maximize safety. Our main pool water quality continues to be spot on. And we’ve been open daily noon to 8 p.m., unlike nearby Sahm Park, which closed for the summer.
But don’t take
our word for it – watch these videos from key stakeholders:
- Click here to hear Osprey Cricle
resident Amy Stawick explain why the Pool is important to her family and why
it’s an important neighborhood asset.
- Click here to hear Facilities Co-Manager Kenny Burns provide an update on the facility’s operational status, including the challenges facing the baby wading pool.
Signup sheets will be posted on the windows under the Clubhouse deck. Spots are limited, and enrollment is first-come, first-served so don’t wait to sign up. (P.S.: Parents must stay for the entire session, as this is not a drop-and-go event. And don’t forget your Pool fob!)
Crime Watch event: National Night Out, Tuesday, Aug. 4
Join us for our Q3 Crime Watch meeting and Open House supporting National Night Out, 6:30 p.m. at the Clubhouse. This is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with safety-minded residents, as well as meet new Crime Watch Coordinator and Board member Jason Van Meter, who is replacing interim coordinator John Strauss. We look forward to hearing your questions, concerns and suggestions!
Annual Party set for Sunday, Aug. 9
It’s party time! Save the date for our Annual Party on Sunday, Aug. 9, from noon to 2 p.m. Per tradition, here’s what you can expect:
- Free food: Fried chicken, salads,
chips and desserts. It’s a pot-luck, too, so we encourage residents to donate a
side and share recipes!
- Free beverages: Kids can enjoy
lemonade and bottled water. Adults (21 and older) are welcome to a variety of beers
and hard ciders.
- A cool pool: Don't forget to
bring your swimsuit and your Pool fob – the Pool will be open from noon to 8
p.m. The water is calling!
- Gift card drawings: Be sure to grab a raffle ticket and write your name on it when you come in. We'll call winners every half hour!
We hope you can
join us, because the Annual Party is a great opportunity to connect with new
and longtime neighbors (and one last neighborhood hurrah before school starts).
Life is good in Eagle Nest!

Speaking of staying informed, a reminder that our Eagle

Facebook page and private email blast (email
scottthien@comcast.net to join) are the only
official platforms for our neighborhood news. Sure, Next Door has an Eagle Nest
group, but that is not managed or endorsed by your Eagle Nest Board. And don’t
be fooled by lookalike or similarly named Facebook pages – ours is called ENPOA and is open to the
public. As always, of course, you can reach out to any Board member with questions.
We hope everyone is having a great summer. As always, feel free to reach out with questions and suggestions!
On behalf of the Board,
Scott
Thien,
