A handful of Eagle Nest residents gathered at the Clubhouse on Nov. 7 to hear two Marion County deputy prosecutors share their property crime prevention tips. Daphne Whitmire and Amie Martens are part of the Multi-jurisdictional Offender Strategy Team (MOST), which encourages Marion County residents to proactively prevent crime, particularly through landscaping and marking or engraving possessions. Whitmire and Martens showed slides of homes with good and bad landscaping and lighting. Attendees   signed up for an invisible pen to mark their possessions, and they registered for a special code for their possessions that could be identified if stolen. Attending residents also received a sticker to put on their front door noting that their possessions were coded. Whitmire and Martens also advised residents that the p rosecuter’s office has an engraving machine that neighborhoods can use. This year’s leaf collection program runs Monday, Nov. 5, to Monday, Nov. 30. Each Eagle Nest resident is permitted up to 40 bags for free disposal. Collection days are every Monday through the end of the month. Other key details, according to the Department of Public Works: > Place the leaf bags out by 7 a.m. on your regular trash day. > Separate your leaf pick-up from your regular trash. For example, put leaves on opposite side of driveway or use different colored bags and/or tie wraps.  > Keep leaf bags at least three feet away from cart collection areas so DPW trucks can service the cart. > Make sure sewer inlets and drainage pipes are clear of leaves to avoid drainage problems. Fellow Eagle Nest residents, On the morning of Sept. 21, while on her way to work, a Teel Way neighbor was hit by a woman running the turn light at 71st and Shadeland. Our Teel Way neighbor was stopped and when the light turned green she headed through the intersection and was hit. Apparently, the other driver is disputing that sequence of events. Unfortunately, no witnesses stopped to assist and as a result it's one word against another. Our Teel Way neighbor recently wrote, "I was hoping we might be able to put a little entry on the site to see if any of neighbors were traveling the intersection around 7:50 a.m.-8 a.m. that morning and saw what happened. I am desperate to prove she was at fault. I have never had a claim on my insurance and don't want to be blamed for something I was not in control of." Got a gripe for Mayor Greg Ballard? Want to hear what his administration has planned for the Northeastside, and how Eagle Nest could be affected? Make plans to attend the 48th annual Mayor's Night Out, an opportunity to meet Ballard and key city representatives responsible for roads, crime and fire prevention, public works, etc. The event will be Thursday, Oct. 11, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Heritage Christian School, 6401 E. 75th Street. The event will be in the school's Fine Arts Building (look for the large HCS cross logo on the building). The event is free and open to the public. This is a great opportunity for Eagle Nest residents to hear area residents' questions and concerns, as well as share their own. The event also is a great way to meet the city officials directly responsible for running the various municipal departments that we all depend on -- and to bend their ears on what we as a neighborhood need and would like. Sad to see summer go? Jump in the Eagle Nest pool one last time this weekend before our pool staff closes up the facility for the season. The pool will be open both Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 6 p.m. Pool manager Susan Anderson will have the heater on, so the water should be comfortable. Depending on whose local forecast you believe, temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-70s -- with Sunday being the warmest. While you're there, be sure to thank the lifeguards for their excellent service this season.

The following is from a news release by Noelle Malatestinic (Cell: 317.408.1991), Eagle Nest liaison to Mayor Greg Ballard's office for the Northeastside/City of Indianapolis: "This is a friendly reminder that there will be NO residential trash, heavy trash, or curbside recycling service on Monday, September 3, in observance of Labor Day. All routes will run one day behind as a result. Monday’s routes will run on Tuesday, Tuesday’s routes will run on Wednesday, and so on, with Friday routes being run on Saturday, September 8. All routes will return to normal schedules on Monday, September 11."
